Rising Leaders Spark a Movement with Outdoor Movie Night
On a warm evening filled with laughter, community, and popcorn, over 120 people gathered for an unforgettable Outdoor Movie Night hosted by the students of the Rising Leaders program. Families stretched out on picnic blankets, kids lined up for face painting, and a local food truck added flavor to a night that was both fun and meaningful.
What made the event truly special was what it represented: the final project of a group of high school seniors who spent weeks learning the ropes of event planning, financial literacy, and civic engagement through the Rising Leaders program.
These students didn’t just plan a movie night—they took on real responsibility, coordinating vendors, managing logistics, promoting the event, and working with community partners. Along the way, they developed valuable leadership skills that will serve them far beyond graduation.
“I learned what it takes to put an event like this together,” said Tyson Clemens.
“In this group, it taught me how to be more in tune with my community,” added Janiyah Brown.
Community member Collin Bagley summed it up powerfully: “Without events like this, your community just dies.”
Events like Outdoor Movie Night do more than provide entertainment. They help a community breathe. They create moments where people from all backgrounds and walks of life come together in a shared space, enjoying something simple and joyful. They build trust, foster pride, and remind people that this place—this town—is worth showing up for.
Community events spark connection in neighborhoods that may otherwise feel disconnected. They give children positive experiences and memories tied to their hometown. They bring out families, elders, and young people alike, offering a rare and valuable space where everyone belongs. And most importantly, they offer hope—proof that good things can happen here, and that local leaders, even young ones, are already making it so.
As Crystal Vital put it: “It brings a lot of togetherness.”
The impact of the Rising Leaders’ event has extended far beyond a single night. Inspired by the success, community members are already calling for more Outdoor Movie Nights—proof that this initiative has sparked something lasting.
The Rising Leaders program shows what’s possible when youth are given tools, trust, and responsibility. It proves that leadership can be learned, but more importantly, it can be lived—and shared.
The movement has begun. And the community is ready to keep it going.
